The Moon's Forgotten Pilgrim
When evening loosed her silver hair
Upon the shoulders of the hills,
A lonely wanderer climbed the air
Where silence drank from hidden rills.
The forest wore a dreaming face;
Each cedar bowed as though in prayer,
And shadows moved with measured grace,
Like whispered psalms that filled the air.
A pale-white raven crossed the moon,
Its wings unstirred by mortal breeze;
It sang a strange forgotten tune
That wandered through the ancient trees.
The river, with enchanted tongue,
Remembered names no man could keep;
Its crystal hymns were softly sung
To stones that never learned to sleep.
Then from the mist a maiden came,
Her garments woven out of dew;
No earthly heart had known her name,
Yet every flower believed it true.
She raised a lantern made of rain,
Whose trembling light revealed the sky;
The stars bent low to hear again
The secret no one dared deny.
"Seek not," she cried, "the world of men,
Where reason builds her walls of stone;
For every soul returns again
To dreams it once had called its own.
The winds are wiser than the throne,
The clouds remember every birth;
The lonely heart is never lone
That hears the hidden pulse of Earth."
She vanished with the falling mist;
The moon withdrew behind a cloud;
The raven's song could still be kissed
By echoes neither fierce nor loud.
I walked until the dawn was born,
Its golden breath on field and stream;
Yet every rose concealed a thorn
That guarded fragments of the dream.
And now, when twilight folds the day
Like sacred pages gently furled,
I hear that unseen raven say:
"The truest kingdoms fade away,
Yet live forever in the world
The dreaming spirit dares to build
Beyond the reach of waking will."
