Surrealism
- Surrealism emerged in the 1920s as a radical artistic and literary movement that sought to liberate the human mind from rational control. Formally inaugurated by André Breton in the Manifesto of Surrealism (1924), it drew heavily on the psychoanalytic theories of Sigmund Freud, especially the idea that dreams and the unconscious reveal deeper truths than conscious logic.
- Breton defined Surrealism as “pure psychic automatism” writing or creating without censorship by reason or morality. The goal was not simply aesthetic novelty, but a revolution of perception: to dissolve the boundary between dream and reality.
2. Core Features of Surrealism
a) Dream Imagery
- Surrealist works frequently resemble dreams- illogical, fluid, symbolic.
b) Automatism
- Automatic writing attempts to bypass conscious control. The writer lets thoughts flow freely, creating unexpected associations.

- Familiar things appear strange, distorted, or unsettling.

3. Surrealism in Literature
3.1 André Breton – Nadja (1928)
- Breton’s semi-autobiographical novel blurs reality and hallucination. The mysterious character Nadja seems both real and dreamlike, embodying Surrealism’s fascination with madness and unconscious spontaneity.
- The narrative lacks traditional plot structure; instead, it unfolds through fragments, reflections, and images.
3.2 Franz Kafka – The Metamorphosis
- Although Kafka predates official Surrealism, his work strongly influenced the movement.
- In The Metamorphosis, Gregor Samsa wakes up transformed into a giant insect. The transformation is accepted almost matter-of-factly, intensifying the absurdity. The bizarre event symbolizes alienation and modern anxiety, central concerns later embraced by Surrealists.
3.3 Federico García Lorca – Poet in New York
- Lorca’s poetry uses startling imagery:

- Surrealism in film disrupts realism through dream logic, fractured identity, uncanny imagery, and symbolic spaces. While classical Surrealism began in Europe in the 1920s, its techniques continue to shape both English-language cinema and select strands of Bollywood storytelling.

- The Natioal Workshop on Academic Writing organized by the Department of English, MKBU, in collaboration with KCG, was a six-day learning experience that completely changed my understanding of academic writing and research for my future outlook.
- Dr. Kalyani Vallath’s workshop deeply reshaped my understanding of what it means to study English in the present time. As a student of English literature, I have often been surrounded by notes, summaries, and the pressure to remember interpretations. Her message made me realize that true learning does not lie in memorizing what others have said, but in developing my own critical thinking, analytical ability, and intellectual independence. It encouraged me to see literature not just as a subject to study, but as a discipline that builds perception, interpretation, and professional strength.
- One of the most important realizations for me was the shift from passive learning to skill-based learning. With the changing academic environment under NEP 2020 and the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence, it became clear that literary knowledge alone is no longer sufficient. I understood that I must also develop communication skills, digital literacy, and adaptability. This resonated strongly with me because I value writing and interpretation, and the workshop made me see how these abilities can evolve into meaningful professional opportunities.
- Her emphasis on academic writing particularly stayed with me. I had always believed that writing requires complete clarity before beginning, but I learned that writing itself is a process of discovery. It is not a natural gift, but a skill built through discipline, planning, and reflection. The idea of identifying research gaps and organizing thoughts logically helped me understand that academic writing is a structured intellectual practice. It gave me confidence to trust my own thinking and to approach research with patience rather than hesitation.
- The discussion on Artificial Intelligence was equally thought-provoking. I realized that AI is a tool that can support learning, but it cannot replace human originality or intellectual honesty. This helped me reflect on the importance of maintaining authenticity in my academic work. It reinforced my belief that technology should assist my thinking, not define it.
- Her advice on preparing for competitive exams like UGC NET and SET also changed my perspective. Instead of trying to memorize everything, I understood the importance of logical reasoning, conceptual clarity, and strategic thinking. This approach felt more practical and aligned with my own learning style, as I prefer understanding ideas deeply rather than memorizing them mechanically.
- Perhaps the most inspiring part of the workshop was her discussion on career possibilities. It made me realize that studying English opens doors beyond traditional academic roles. Fields like content writing, publishing, media, and communication allow students to apply their literary and analytical skills in diverse ways. The idea of building a digital portfolio especially motivated me, as it reflects both personal growth and professional identity.
- Overall, this workshop encouraged me to see my academic journey differently. It strengthened my confidence in choosing English literature and reminded me that growth comes from discipline, curiosity, and adaptability. It inspired me to move beyond dependence on notes and to develop my own intellectual voice. I now see academic excellence not as a destination, but as a continuous process of learning, questioning, and evolving.
